For Women’s History Month, we’ve been chatting with female leaders from AmeriHealth New Jersey to talk about what this year’s theme, “Women Providing Healing, Promoting Hope” means to them as women in health care.
Meet Sheila Van Daly, RN, BSN, CCM, MBA. Sheila is the manager of clinical services at AmeriHealth New Jersey.
What does Women’s History Month mean to you?
This is a good time to remember and recognize the contributions and successes of women throughout time of all ages and backgrounds. Women’s roles and careers have changed significantly over time and created vast opportunities for women in continuing education and employment.
Could you share one piece of advice for women who might want to pursue a career in health care?
Go for it! There are so many opportunities outside of working in a traditional hospital or clinical setting. Working in a clinical setting is key to getting an understanding of health care, but it provides so many opportunities as a stepping stone. I had no idea while in nursing school that I would end up in the health insurance industry and earning an MBA to tie in the business and clinical aspects.
Who inspired you to go after a career in health care?
My mother. I actually had no idea what I wanted to do in high school. My mother steered me towards nursing because of the opportunities there were, not knowing where I would eventually land.
And lastly, what would you tell the younger version of yourself?
Just push forward. Strive for what you want until you get it!
